Shri Somnath Education Society holds a rich legacy and an inspiring journey in the field of education. Since its inception, the Society has upheld a visionary mission: to provide quality education to students from all sections of society, regardless of caste, creed, or religion.
The journey began on 14th June 1960, under the leadership of the first trustee, Honourable Shri Kanaiyalal Munshi Ji, who named the institution “Somnath College.” The first principal was Shri I.V. Trivedi, a distinguished scholar and benchmate of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India.
The college initially operated from a royal palace near the sea coast of Veraval, generously allotted by the Shri Somnath Trust.
In 1967, the Commerce stream was introduced—marking a milestone as the first of its kind in the entire Junagadh District.
The expansion continued with the establishment of a Primary School in 1974 and a High School in 1979. By 1982, the Trust acquired its own land to develop dedicated buildings and a spacious playground, bringing all educational units under one umbrella.
In 2016-17, J. M. Science College, Veraval, was established, offering undergraduate programs (B.Sc.) in Microbiology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Botany, recognized by Bhakta Kavi Narsinh Mehta University. To further academic excellence, the J. M. Science P.G. Centre, Veraval, was recognized for M.Sc. Microbiology in 2021-22, followed by M.Sc. Chemistry in 2022-23.
The institution is committed to holistic development. Students are provided with ample opportunities in sports, N.C.C., N.S.S., and subject-based research. State-of-the-art laboratories for Microbiology, Chemistry, and Physics support hands-on learning and innovation.
We take immense pride in our students’ achievements, which have set benchmarks across disciplines. Their accomplishments have brought recognition not only to our institution but have also been a source of pride for Bhakta Kavi Narsinh Mehta University.
